Marex 440 from above in clear water
About Marex · Est. 1973

Mare. Rex. King of the sea.

The name is two Latin words — "mare", the sea, and "rex", the king. Fifty years of Norwegian family boatbuilding sit behind it.

The Story

Marex was founded in 1973 in Grimstad, on Norway's southern coast, by Eyvin Aalrud. His sons Thomas and Espen took the helm in 1989, and the family still runs the shipyard today — now the most famous producer of quality family boats, with a 28,000 m² facility in Kaunas, Lithuania, 420 dedicated boatbuilders, and a dealer network spanning Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Canada, New Zealand — and now Australia.

197324 Sun Cab — the first Marex

A modern boat in a traditional style, safe, with an efficient diesel. Customers queued to sign — 42 boats sold at a single boat show, 432 hulls over its life.

197532 Friendship

With its exceptional interior spaces, the biggest Norwegian fibreglass boat of its day — sleeping up to eight guests.

1979The Sun Cruiser concept is born

The idea that still defines the range: genuine cruising comfort in a compact, seaworthy hull.

2016The modern era

The 370 Aft Cabin resets expectations of what a family cruiser can be, and sharpens the focus on premium mid-size cruisers built without compromise.

2026Australia

Marex appoints Flagship International Yacht Brokers as its exclusive Australian dealer.

2027The next chapter

A new 11,000 m² production facility opens in Kaunas, expanding capacity for the decade ahead.

Design & Naval Architecture

A hull of their own. A vision to match.

Over five decades Marex has developed and refined its own planing hull — designed for efficiency, manoeuvrability, safety and comfort — combining classic Norwegian craftsmanship with modern engineering. Partnerships with VOM Creations, Alpha Group and Nikl Design push it further still.

Every system aboard exists to make life on the water easier. As the shipyard puts it: the family is the crew — and if the crew is happy, the family is happy.

"The functional design should be cutting-edge and state-of-the-art. It has to show direction into the future." The Marex design vision

Philosophy

Obsessed with practicality. Built for weather.

The mission is straightforward: be the best builder of 30-to-50-foot family boats in the world. Scandinavian conditions — short seasons, fast-changing weather — forced solutions that now pay off everywhere, Australia included.

The Smart Canopy

Born from real boating need, not a brochure. Generations of refinement have made it the fastest cockpit enclosure system in the world — open boat to closed cruiser in under a minute, heated or air-conditioned.

Every hull sea-trialled

Total control of every stage of the build ends the same way every time: each individual hull tested on the water before it reaches its owner.

Fifty years of listening

Customer feedback flows straight into design and functionality. Storage where you need it, systems that one person can run, safety without compromise.

Marex × Flagship International

Now at home in Australia.

Norway's rocky coast and challenging seas shaped every Marex — conditions, as CEO Espen Aalrud says, in many ways very similar to Australia's. Flagship International Yacht Brokers represents the marque exclusively here, from Rose Bay Marina in Sydney and the Gold Coast.
